Wireless Printer Adapter

Wireless Printer Adapter

A wireless printer adapter is a small devices that plugs into a printer, allowing it to be accessed by computers on their networks without the need for printer cables. There a few types of wireless printer adapters, ranging from universal adapters that don't require drivers to adapters that utilize Bluetooth technology.

How Wireless Printer Adapters Work
Wireless networking is very popular today. Desktops, laptops and handheld devices all use wireless technology to connect to the Internet now. Wireless networks require a signal to be broadcast to devices within a network. This wireless signal is broadcast by the network's router. Devices with wireless adapters can then seek the signal out and connect to it to access the Internet and other devices on the network.

Wireless printer adapters are designed to receive connection information from a network's router using the same connection method as computers. Once a wireless printer adapter has connected to a wireless router or network, it is assigned an IP address. Computers can use this IP address to send pages to the printer for printing. Networks that don't have wireless routers can still utilize wireless network adapters, either by directly connecting to the printer from a computer or by using Bluetooth technology. Once a wireless adapter is connected to a printer, any device on it's network can print from the printer. Also, special permissions can be assigned in the adapter's interface to block or specific devices from printing.

Benefits of Wireless Printer Adapters
Using a wireless printer adapter eliminates the need for a printer to be physically seated near a computer, as cords are not needed to connect the devices.

The need for multiple printers in a single network is eliminated by wireless printing, as several devices can send pages for print simultaneously. In this event, the printer will print each request in the order they were received.

Wireless printer adapters also allow users to print from multiple locations, even outside of their network from the Internet. Perhaps the greatest benefit of wireless printing is that messy cords, often draped over the desks of older computer systems can be eliminated. The only cord needed for wireless printing is the printer's power cord.

The best idea when setting up wireless printing is to buy an external adapter, such as wireless USB and Bluetooth adapters. This is because if a printer ceases to work, the adapter can be transferred to another printer with ease.

Printing through a Wireless Printer Adapter from the Internet
Printers equipped with wireless adapters that allow the device to be networked can be printed to from the Internet. This enables users to print pages at home when they are away at work or on vacation. To print pages while not on the local network, users need to know their IP address or have remote desktop software installed.

USB Wireless Printer Adapters
Most wireless printer adapters are made to plug into a printer's USB port. Virtually all printers have USB ports, so these adapters are pretty universal. Computers are usually also equipped with two or more USB ports so this option is best for device compatibility and simplicity.

Some USB printer adapters require drivers to be installed on the computer. This is generally only the case with adapters that come packaged with companion adapters made to be used by the computer. Installing printer drivers is simple though, and only requires users to insert the installation CD in their computer and begin the automated installation process. Most drivers of this sort can be installed in under a minute and don't require restarting your computer. Wireless USB printer adapters are great for those with little computer skills as they can easily by installed by just about anyone.

Bluetooth Wireless Printer Adapters
Some networks do not contain wireless routers. Fortunately, these networks can still use wireless printer adapters through a Bluetooth connection.

Bluetooth connections do not have the range of basic wireless networking signals, such as those used by wireless G and N devices however can still eliminate the need for unsightly printer cables.

Bluetooth adapters for printers need to be used with computers that are also Bluetooth enabled. Bluetooth is built in to newer computers, cell phones and other devices. Computers that do not have Bluetooth adapters will need to have one installed. Bluetooth adapters are generally cheap and do not require software installation on current computers. They simply plug into a computer's USB port, allowing the computer to receive and transmit Bluetooth signals to the printers adapter.

Bluetooth also offers the advantage of being compatible with most modern cellphones and cameras. Pictures can often be printed from such devices without the need for cords, through a quick Bluetooth connection.
